[Interview] : Kwabs

If you didn’t know Kwabs this late into 2014…where have you been! This rising musician is hot on the streets of the net and has confirmed his presence with a feature on the FIFA 15 soundtrack. Making waves bigger than ever, we look back at our interview with him earlier in the year. (Taken from URBANLUNCH Magazine 2014).

So your success as a rising star was helped by your online presence on SoundCloud and music blogs, how much significance would you give online media as a platform to start a music career?
Online media has a massive effect on people’s careers when they’re starting out, providing that what they’re doing is good. It gives artists the chance to showcase their music in a way they couldn’t before. It also empowers fans to directly support the careers of artists they love by sharing that music publicly.

[Interview] : GoldLink

The latest rapper to become an internet sensation; GoldLink has become known, uniquely for his tight flow and wild lyrics. However his most distinct feature is his experimentation with electronic sounds, working with KAYTRANDA, Lakim and Sango, GoldLink has created a thrilling genre blend, that only has growth in sight.

Now let’s start with facts, you’re hotly tipped to be a massive rapper in 2015, do you feel pressured to live up to the hype created by music blogs?
No, not at all. A wise, successful man once told me that you should never ever read what’s said about you because you’ll let it dictate who you become. I’m very flattered with all the praise I’ve been receiving but, I don’t feel any pressure to live up to the hype; I’m going to continue to do what I do, regardless.

What made you want to collaborate with alternative electronic producers such as KAYTRANADA and Sango rather than going down current list of urban producers?
Because I’m actually a fan of KAYTRANADA and Sango’s music opposed to any other urban producer, period. They have a very distinct, tasteful, and unique sound that’s just undeniably appealing to me. Why not work with what you love?

[Interview] : Luke Sital-Singh

Earlier this year,  Luke Sital-Singh became a regular on the Ones To Watch for 2014 lists. From Amazon and Apple to the Guardian and BBC; there was no denying that the singer/songwriter was a force to be reckoned with. Now the prince of acoustic music is dropping his debut album, a process which he describes as  exciting and thrilling(Taken from URBANLUNCH Magazine 2014)

At the start of the year you were hotly tipped by almost every publication to be a singer to watch, has this made the debut release even more pressurising?
I think it’s made it more exciting really. It’s helped to increase my fan base and there’s plenty of my songs out there for people to listen to in the meantime. The album isn’t going to shock anyone who’s heard what I’ve been putting out leading up to it. It’s a continuation of my EPs. I’m just really excited for people to finally get hold of it.

How did you feel when your name made the masses of 2014 lists?Surprised and delighted. It was great to have some strong proof that my music was connecting with people and that also those ‘in the know’ thought there was something to it. But at the end of the day you just have to take that stuff with a pinch of salt and get on with doing what you were doing.

Hey Josh! So let’s talk Glastonbury, did you ever think you’d be playing at one of the world’s biggest music festivals?
Never! Everyday something new happens and I have to take a step back and remember how lucky I am to be doing what I love!

What’s your favourite aspect of live performances?
I love playing live as it helps me to keep connected with my songs and the reasons why I wrote them. It’s amazing to hear people singing along and responding to them too!

You recently collaborated with Bondax, can we see any more experimentation with electronic music from you?
100 per cent. I love all sorts of music and I’m always experimenting. Bondax are amazing and I was a big fan so was an easy collaboration. More recently I have been hanging out with a producer called G R A D E S who is incredible so hopefully we will do something when the time is right.

[Interview] : Aquilo

Lake District duo Aquilo are pioneers of electronic soul. After widespread acclaim from the likes of NME and the BBC, the pair seem ready to blow up Disclosure style.  Already defined and unique, their heavenly mesh of soul sounds, really bring Aquilo head and shoulders above their rivals.

So guys, you both started off on the rock scene, how did you move from rock to electronic soul?
We both started listening to different music, experimenting with different instruments and synthesisers eventually stumbling across a sound we liked. There was never a conscious decision to change genre or sound. It was quite an organic, exciting process.

Grades-Producer

[Interview] : Grades

After becoming an electronic sensation with his remix of Lana Del Ray’s single West Coast; Grades is set to bring some high-class, British, electronica.

Your remix of Lana’s track West Coast caught major attention, how do you know when a track would create a great remix?
For me it’s all about the vocal, as I rarely use many instrumental parts from the original when approaching a remix. Vocals with strong character, that evoke some kind of emotion are always best, as was the case with Lana’s which is probably why she gets remixed by so many producers. I also look out for interesting vocal melodies that I can chop up to create cool new hooks.

Which artists and cultures have inspired the sound you create?
I grew up listening to a lot of Hip Hop, and my production is heavily influenced by Soul and R&B, whilst on the other hand I’ve always been obsessed with electronic music and discovering new and emerging sounds and genres. At my flat I have a wall of some of my favourite and most inspirational album covers, which range from Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince to Gorillaz & Kanye West.
